Later consulting with friends and eliminating ones nosotros didn't love, we narrowed it down to 5 or 6 finalists, and somewhen settled on Quora."[ix] Cheever went on to country, "The closest competition that [the name] Quora had was Quiver."[9]

2010–2013: Early on growth [edit]

In March 2010, Quora, Inc. was valued at $86 million.[6] Quora first became available to the public on June 21, 2010, and was praised for its interface and for the quality of the answers written past its users, many of whom were recognized equally experts in their fields.[vi] Quora's user base of operations increased quickly, and by late December 2010, the site was seeing spikes of visitors v to ten times its usual load—so much that the website initially had difficulties handling the increased traffic.[10] Until 2018, Quora did not evidence ads because "...ads can often be negative for user feel. Nobody likes banner ads, ads from shady companies, or ads that are irrelevant to their needs."[three]

In June 2011, Quora redesigned the navigation and usability of its website.[11] Co-founder Adam D'Angelo compared the redesigned Quora to Wikipedia, and stated that the changes to the website were fabricated on the footing of what had worked and what had non when the website had experienced unprecedented growth vi months earlier.[xi] In September 2012, co-founder Charlie Cheever stepped down as co-operator of the company, taking an advisory role.[12] The other co-founder, Adam D'Angelo, connected to maintain a high degree of command over the company.[3]

In January 2013, Quora launched a blogging platform allowing users to mail not-answer content.[thirteen] Quora launched a full-text search of questions and answers on its website on March twenty, 2013,[14] and extended the feature to mobile devices in tardily May 2013.[15] It also announced in May 2013 that usage metrics had tripled relative to the same time in the prior yr.[16] In November 2013, Quora introduced a feature called Stats to permit all Quora users to meet summary and detailed statistics of how many people had viewed, upvoted, and shared their questions and answers.[17] [eighteen] TechCrunch reported that, although Quora had no immediate plans for monetization, they believed that search ads would likely exist their eventual source of revenue.[19]

2014–2017: Continued growth and new features [edit]

Google Search popularity for Quora, 2012–2017

2014 organization [edit]

Quora was evolving into "a more than organized Yahoo Answers, a classier Reddit, an opinionated Wikipedia", and became popular in tech circles.[3] In April 2014, Quora raised $80 one thousand thousand from Tiger Global at a reported $900 1000000 valuation.[20] [21] Quora was one of the Summer 2014 Y Combinator companies,[22] although it was described every bit "the oldest Y-Combinator ever".[23]

Parlio acquisition [edit]

In March 2016, Quora acquired the online community website Parlio.[24]

Question details [edit]

Users were able to add together descriptions to questions. On Dec 8th, 2015, these were limited to 300 characters, and questions themselves to 150, not affecting existing questions.[25] On August 3rd, 2017, question details were discontinued entirely and replaced with an optional source URL input field to provide context, reportedly to encourage users to phrase questions more descriptively. Existing question details were stored in comments nether respective questions.[26]

[edit]

In Apr 2016, Quora began a limited rollout of advertizement on the site.[27] The first ad placement that the company accepted was from Uber.[3] Over the next few years the site began gradually to show more than ads, but yet maintained efforts to limit the number of ads and to go on the ads it did show relevant to the users seeing them.[3]

2018–2019: Further growth and data alienation [edit]

In September 2018, Quora reported that information technology was receiving 300 million unique visitors every month.[3] [36] Despite its large number of registered users, Quora did not possess the same level of mainstream cultural dominance as sites similar Twitter, which, at the time, had roughly 326 one thousand thousand registered users.[iii] [37] This may accept been because a large number of registered users on the site did non employ it regularly and many did not fifty-fifty know they had accounts since they had either created them unknowingly through other social media sites linked to Quora or created them years previously and forgotten about them.[37] [38] Quora uses popups and interstitials to strength users to login or register before they can see more than of the content, similar to a metered paywall.[39]

In Dec 2018, Quora announced that approximately 100 million user accounts were afflicted by a data alienation.[37] [40] The hacked information included users' names, email addresses, encrypted passwords, information from social networks like Facebook and Twitter if people had called to link them to their Quora accounts, questions they had asked, and answers they had written.[40] Adam D'Angelo stated, "The overwhelming majority of the content accessed was already public on Quora, simply the compromise of account and other private information is serious."[40]Compromised information could also allow hackers to log into a Quora user'southward connected social media accounts, via access tokens. A class action lawsuit, instance number five:18-cv-07597-BLF, was filed in the Northern Commune of California, on behalf of named plaintiffs in New Jersey and Colorado by Capstone Law and Franklin D. Azar & Assembly, P.C.[41] [42]

By May 2019, Quora was valued at $two billion as a visitor and it was finalizing a $60 million investment circular, which was led by Valor Equity Partners, a private equity house with ties to Tesla, Inc. and SpaceX.[3] In spite of this, the site still showed very few ads compared to other sites of its kind and the company was even so struggling to plow a turn a profit, having made only $xx 1000000 in acquirement in 2018.[3] Several investors passed on the opportunity to invest in Quora, citing the company'south "poor rails record of actually making money."[3] Schleifer characterized the disparity between Quora's valuation as a company and its actual profits as a issue of "the loftier valuation for virtually everything these days in the tech sector."[3]

In December 2019, Quora announced that information technology would open up its starting time international engineering role in Vancouver, which would bargain with car learning and other engineering functions.[43] That same calendar month, Quora launched its Standard arabic, Gujarati, Hebrew, Kannada, Malayalam, and Telugu versions.[44]

In addition, the platform launched a subscription service called Quora+ which allows subscribers to pay a $5 monthly fee or a $50 almanac subscription to access content that whatever creator chooses to put behind a paywall.[47] [48]

The Real Name Policy was rescinded on Apr nineteen, 2021.[46]

As of 2011, the Quora community included answers past some well-known people such as Jimmy Wales, Richard A. Muller, Clayton C. Anderson, Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, and Adrián Lamo,[52] [53] every bit well as some current and quondam professional athletic personalities, scientists, and other experts in their fields.

In Baronial 2012, blogger Ivan Kirigin pointed out that acquaintances and followers could run across his activity, including which questions he had looked at.[54] In response, Quora stopped showing question views in feeds later that month.[55] By default, Quora exposes its users' profiles to search engines. Users tin can disable this feature.[56]

Nigh 150 writers were chosen each yr. Tiptop writers were invited to occasional sectional events and received gifts such equally branded habiliment items and books. The company believed that by cultivating a group of core users who were particularly invested in the site, a positive feedback loop of user appointment would be created.[61]

Later not selecting any 2019 or 2020 English-language Top Writers, the plan was officially retired in April 2021 but will continue in other languages.[62]

Reception [edit]

Reviews [edit]

Quora was reviewed extensively by the media in 2010.[63] [64] [65] Quora was hacked in 2018, leading to loss of information of users to hackers.[66] According to Robert Scoble, Quora succeeded in combining attributes of Twitter and Facebook.[67] Later on, in 2011, Scoble criticized Quora for being a "horrid service for blogging" and, although a decent question and answer website, non substantially better than alternatives.[68]

Quora was highly criticized for removing question details in Baronial 2017. According to some users, the removal of question details express the ability to submit personal questions and questions requiring code excerpts, multimedia, or complexity of any sort that could not fit into the length limit for a URL.[69] [seventy] According to an official product update annunciation, the removal of question details was made to emphasize canonical questions.[71]

The moderation system of Quora has been a ofttimes criticized topic. Criticisms generally hinge around the website'south ineffective, inconsistent, and opaque arroyo to moderation from the perspective of its users: apparent non-violations are automatically flagged by the website's algorithm (such as pasting a web URL to cite a source)[72] while posts that are either counter-factual with no backing sources, or answers and comments that are highly inflammatory, adversarial, or harassing announced to stay despite reporting.[73] The website's responses to moderation appeals are seen by the userbase as impersonal and automatic, leaving many to wonder how much of the website'due south moderation is performed by human being staff and how much is automated.[72] [74] [75] [76]

The inconsistency of Quora moderation has been blamed for the proliferation of harmful prejudices on the website. In 2014, in addition to beingness privately harassed, female person users noted a ubiquity of pointed, sexist questions about women with more than conspicuously sexist question details whereas the aforementioned kinds of questions rephrased to be about men were quickly taken down. I user was subject of a sexually defamatory post containing a photo of her that was taken downward by moderation only subsequently the incident was publicized online.[77] Racism and farthermost far right viewpoints have been noted to be ubiquitous on Quora despite its policies. [78] [79] Some Quora users experience in that location has been an increase of anti-Semitism on the website, pointing to a community for Holocaust denial.[80] Others point to moderation decisions that seem biased confronting Palestinian posters, including the banning of Rima Najjar, too as banning the Palestinian culture, history and politics space "Palestine Today" iii times from 2017 to February 2020. [81]

Employ in influence operations [edit]

In 2018, the People's Daily, the official newspaper of the Key Committee of the Chinese Communist Political party, reported on successful results from coordinated apply of Quora in foreign propaganda campaigns.[82]

Lawsuit [edit]

On January 1, 2020, a retired Palestinian-American professor, Rima Najjar Merriman, filed a lawsuit against Quora at the United States Commune Court for the Northern District of California. Her lawsuit alleged that she had been wrongfully banned from Quora for posting hate oral communication for calling some other posters "Zionists" and for "calling out" other writers.[83] [84] On March 23, 2020, Merriman filed for a voluntary dismissal of her lawsuit.[85]
